How do the people of Lauchhammer remember the industrial age and its decline? With this question in mind, students from the University of Greifswald travelled to Lusatia on 21 and 22 February 2025. This was the seventh storytelling café organised in the town as part of the VOICES research project.
Discussions focused on the lack of industry in the area, health issues, missed opportunities, the decline of local businesses and culture, and the lack of young people in the city. The conversations painted a picture of uncertainty and disillusionment; unfortunately, there was little optimism to be found in this round.
In addition to the storytelling café, the programme included visits to the Welzow open-cast mine and the F60 conveyor bridge (‘Kanzlerblick’). The research trip offered the students the opportunity to explore the consequences of structural change on the ground and to grasp the dimensions of the region’s industrial heritage.
