On 23-24 April 2026, Anke Fiedler from University of Greifswald gave a keynote speech on the topic of “Locality Constructed, Contested, and Lived: Rethinking Media Inequality in Post-Industrial Communities” at the workshop “Locality and Context: Examining the Role of Place in Understanding Media Inequalities”, organised by scholars from Indiana University’s The Media School, Freie Universität Berlin and the Weizenbaum Institute at the IU Europe Gateway.
This workshop, organised by Dr Jason Peifer, Dr Mike Gruszczynski and Dr Radhika Parameswaran, looked into the development of collaborative research projects focused on media inequalities and ‘locality’, involving scholars from the US and Germany. The projects will primarily examine media-related phenomena that vary according to contextual differences, including, but not limited to, contrasts between East and West, North and South, local and national, and urban and rural.
